The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) has been in effect since January 1, 1967. This provides a monthly non-taxable benefit to low-income Old Age Security (OAS) recipients that meet certain income and residency requirements. The GIS is reduced by $1 for each $2 of income, excluding the OAS pension and other defined income amounts. Rates are adjusted periodically to reflect any increases in the cost of living as measured by the consumer price index.
